It’s a great time to be a Pittsburgher. Spring appears to have arrived early, the Penguins have won nine straight, baseball season has not started yet, and two star-studded movies are slated to be filmed here in the very near future.
Yes, it is a great time to be a Pittsburgher.
But maybe not a lighting director, as Christian Bale is set to make his triumphant return to the Steel City to film Out of the Furnace in which he plays an ex-con trying to adapt to society. Unfortunately, this means that the Batmobile will not be returning, which is a shame because all movies are better with Batmobiles. The film will be shot in Braddock (which, ironically, is not really a step up from prison) that will be turning a dramatic performance as Indiana (just because Manning’s gone doesn’t mean things are that bleak). The movie’s directed by Scott Cooper (Crazy Heart) and also stars Robert Duvall. The film’s been described as gritty, which is good because Braddock is not romantic.
Not to be outdone in the returning to Pittsburgh department is Matt Damon, who has been absent from our fair city since filming Kevin Smith’s Dogma in 1998. This time he’s teaming back up with Good Will Hunting director Gus Van Sant for something called Promised Land. Damon portrays a salesman returning to a small town where his life changes. This film, whatever is it, also stars Frances McDormand and Jim from The Office.
