Though we at Hollyburgh have not been informed as to the nature of the eponymous secret of Steel City Secret Cinema, we can remind you that the unique movie-going experience is happening a week from Thursday. We can also let you know that organizer Colin Matthews has extended the VIP ticket special for Hollyburgh readers. By entering HOLLYBURGH when purchasing tickets at Showclix, you can receive $3 off VIP admission—a generous offer to theater enthusiasts that reinforces the non-secret theme of the event.
While the transition from 35mm to digital makes movie-making affordable to such low- and no-budget films as Scream Park and Sonny Days, the changeover is potentially harmful to theaters with equally small budgets. Independent theaters, like Dormont’s historic Hollywood, often take out bank loans simply to afford the new equipment.
To help ease the financial burden of the Hollywood, Mt. Washington resident Colin Matthews has organized Steel City Secret Cinema to raise funds for one of the few remaining single-screen venues in the region.
“I was inspired by work I’ve seen in other cities like Austin and Los Angeles. Pittsburgh’s sudden film resurgence and thriving art community seemed like a natural fit for a similar event,” Matthews said.
On October 25, 13 artists will be exhibiting pieces at the theater — all of which are inspired by films shot in the area. Local staples Eat N’ Park and Giant Eagle will provide the food, and neighboring Cain’s Saloon will host an after party. DJ duo Tracksploitation will provide music while patrons check out the art from when the doors open at 7PM until the 8:30 show time.
A raffle ticket is included in the $22 admission ($25 the day of the show). Prizes include gift baskets, framed movie posters, gift certificates to local businesses, signed merchandise, and even a Monroeville Zombies jersey.
That much we can tell you. We cannot, however, divulge the title of the movie. That’s where the whole “secret cinema” thing comes in. We do know that it’s an R-rated comedy that is significant to Western Pennsylvania.
And we can definitely tell you that the money that you pay for your ticket will go to a good cause. All proceeds from the event will benefit Friends of the Hollywood, the organization that runs the theater.
Tickets ($22 in advance, $25 the day of) are available through Showclix at http://SteelCitySecretCinema.showclix.com/. Also, remember to enter HOLLYBURGH to get $3 off VIP passes.
